There are many diseases related to being overweight, such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, coronary heart disease, to name a few. Thus, you need to find ways to incorporate weight loss activities and good eating habits to our daily routine.

Before you start any type of diet, however, you need to go to a physician first. The doctor will tell you if your weight loss plan is appropriate for your health condition. Furthermore, the physician will also assist you in determining if you really need to lose weight and how much weight you need to shed. Many people develop eating disorders because they do not visit a doctor before drastically changing their eating habits and starting a diet plan.

If you want to lose weight fast, healthy and permanently, you need to follow the tips below.

Maintain a balanced diet

The reason why many people are overweight is partly due to an unbalanced diet. If you eat too much from one food group, you won't be able to get the vitamins and nutrients that your body need.

A balanced diet is composed of protein, dairy food, a little bit of fat from healthy oil, fruit and vegetables, and good carbohydrates -- at least 5 portions every day. Many professionals suggest a diet that is composed of mostly carbohydrate, moderate protein intake, and a little bit of fat.

However, there are many diets espousing a huge amount of protein intake and a dramatic decrease in carbohydrates. Before you apply such diets to your daily routine, you need to talk with a physician first. This high-protein diet may not be ideal for some people, such as those with kidney disease.

Increase servings of fruit and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals that our body need. Such food supplies us with vitamin A that is good for our eyes, vitamin C that boosts our immune system, beta-carotene that helps protects our body from the damage of free radicals, and nutrients.

Most fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and low calorie, so they also help clean our colon and make us feel fuller. Canned fruits and vegetables are acceptable; however, there is no substitute for the real thing.

Stay away from junk food and sugar-loaded drinks

Try eliminating junk food and soda from your diet for a week or two, and you will surely feel and see the difference. Maybe the reason why it is called junk food is due to its poor nutritional value. Try looking at a junk food's label, not only is it full of saturated fat, but also usually high in salt or sugar, or both.

Aside from water, most of the things you drink are also loaded with calories. Soda and sweetened fruit juices are mainly sugar. Thus, no matter how little you eat, but if you still drink lots of soda and sweetened beverages, you will still continue to gain weight.

Don't skip breakfast

Even if you are in a hurry or late for work or school, you need to grab a bite. It would be better if your breakfast is healthy probably an apple, oatmeal and a glass of nonfat milk.

If you miss breakfast, you most probably will feel hungrier the rest of the day. In order for our body function properly, we need energy from the food we eat. If you skip breakfast, or a meal or two, your body's metabolism will slow down to compensate for the lack of energy supply.

More often than not, people who skip meals, particularly the first meal of the day, will binge later in the day. So, even if you skipped breakfast, you will have a tendency to eat a lot during lunch or dinner.

Start exercising

Many of us spend an extended number of hours in our offices. We get stuck sitting down in front of the computer for more than eight hours. When we get home, we spend another hour or two to check e-mails and chat with friends. Thus, we don't expend most of the calories from the food we eat and those excess calories go straight to our belly, arms and thighs.

If you want to increase your metabolism, you must start exercising. Brisk walking is a good way to start your exercise routine. If you do not have time to go to the gym, you need to find ways to increase your activities. Try sports activities that you will enjoy boxing, badminton, or spelunking. There are many to fat burning activities to choose from.

The tips above will not let you lose 10 pounds overnight. However, in the long run, such changes will help you become healthier and fitter. The weight loss you will experience will be more permanent.

Increasing Your Metabolism

If you are attempting to lose weight the two most important things you can do is to start eating right and definitely start an exercise routine. Your ultimate goal is to jump start your metabolism which will enable your body to burn more fat and in turn create more energy since the burning of calories creates energy.

Regardless of the amount of weight you'd like to lose the thing you need to focus on is increasing your metabolism. The reason for this is that when your metabolism is increased it will begin to stabilize at a higher level enabling you to burn more fat for energy at all times.

Now if you feel you need to lose a lot of weight I'd suggest that you first start increasing your metabolism by taking short brisk walks everyday. If you haven't exercised in a while you want to start out slow so that you don't cause injury or burn yourself out early in your quest. So start out with short walks, approximately 10 to 15 minutes per day. This will help to get the heart pumping and increase your blood circulation. This will also start increasing your oxygen intake which will increase the amount of oxygen to your entire body including your joints and ligaments. The addition oxygen helps to burn fat and increase your metabolism. Of course this is just a start and you will see some improvements, but as you get used to the increased exercise you will then want to start increasing the time and speed of your walks.

Once you start feeling your energy level and your strength increase you can then start adding some type of aerobic exercise program. Aerobic exercise will help with increasing your metabolism and help your heart muscles. Be aware that the aerobic heart rate is much higher that the ideal heart rate for burning fat, which is a bit lower in beat per minute. But you will still get the benefits of burning fat while pushing your metabolic rate much higher

Of course if you have less weight to lose your metabolism is probably a little higher already but you can still increase it, with more exercise of course. I'd suggest doing some type of cardio or aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes every other day. I would also recommend eating 5 to 6 smaller meals throughout the day. This will give your body the continuous fuel to increase your metabolism.

The next level you want to approach is the level of strength and muscle building. This type of exercise will definitely increase your metabolism and will assist both men and women to build muscle which will allow the ability to burn fat at all times, even when you are at rest. Good or good! For all you woman don't worry you do not need to get bulky, the weight lifting will provide toning and firming of your muscles and will help with your structure and the strength of your bones. For you men, lifting weights will start to give you more mass or just a more toned and cut look which will help you feel better about your body and yourself.

Many people do turn to supplements to increase their metabolism. This might be helpful but be careful. Make sure that you speak with your doctor whenever you start a new exercise program or if you start taking a metabolism increasing supplement. Be sure that there will not be any repercussions to your health or any conflicts with any prescription you may be taking. Also do some research on the ingredients and make sure they are good quality. There may be many supplements that work but pay attention to what your body is telling you and if the side effects create any discomfort discontinue the use of them.

The thing to focus on is that increasing your metabolism will assist you to burn fat and give you more energy. The addition of more muscle on your body will always make you look and feel better but no matter what route you take to boost your metabolism, make your health your number one priority.

Phase One

Alcohol and fruit are also off limits during this phase.

By the time you finish with Phase 1 craving for sugar etc. is something of the past.

Phase Two

There is no time limit to phase 2. You stay in this phase until you reach your goal weight. It does not matter how much weight you want to lose or how long it takes you to lose it. Eating healthy, delicious South Beach Diet foods will get you there.

You can now slowly start adding some of the foods that were not allowed in the previous phase. Pasta, potatoes and other starches can be back on the menu. Fruit is allowed again, and if you really miss your wine and chocolate you can add them too! Because by now you know which carbs and fats are the good ones, you will be able to make smart choices.

Phase Three

Once you have reached you goal, it is time to move on to Phase 3. By now The South Beach Diet has become a way of life. You feel healthy and full of energy. You will eat what you want, but you will be eating the right foods and maintain your ideal weight.
